Regarding men’s carryalls and luggage, what comes to mind? You may go straight to the grandfathers of fashion: Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Tumi. But luckily for us, there’s a “new kid” on the block in the realm of Italian-made bags for men, and the markup is a lot more do-able for the average fashion aficionado.

At first glance, you may feel immediately smitten with the design. Whether it be the creamy vanilla textured canvas or the buttery soft cognac leather straps, there’s plenty to swoon over with Oliver Cabell. (Must we also not forget the ridiculous sum of hidden pockets for one’s innumerable unmentionables).

But what is most notable, after the initial shock of superb craftsmanship, is the incomparable price tag. Ranging roughly from $240 to $285, the “Logan” Backpack and “Kennedy” Weekender, lack no element or detail but somehow maintain that lust-worthy affordability.

I mean really, the zippers zip with ease and the interior is double lined to a T while the inside zipper pocket is attractively trimmed in leather. Not to mention, all of Oliver Cabell’s products are made in Italy. So, must we surmise, where’s the catch?

When I first received my bags, I almost mistook the logo for the luxury brand, Marc Jacobs – which, by the way, is meant for nothing less than a truthful compliment. And even though it’s not the intention of the designer to mimic another brand, in a sense, it couldn’t hurt. The goal here is to show that materials do not have to be sacrificed for price, and vice versa. Marc Jacobs is currently selling a leather bag for women almost three times smaller than Oliver Cabell, for only $10 cheaper. Yes, materials need to be taken into account, but still. It makes you wonder.

Often, you are paying a markup just based on the designer’s label alone. But then there are the geniuses behind Oliver Cabell.

When browsing a product on Oliver Cabell’s website, next to their price, you are able to see the traditional price of the bag (which, for example, is $285 compared to a staggering $1,695). You then can go even further and click on the price breakdown which takes you through a step by step list (with images) of what each part in the process actually cost the manufacturer.

So, in the end, you saved some (more like a lot) and they made some. So, it’s really a win-win. In the name of fashion-forward design, we choose Oliver Cabell.
